Willie Walters Wrestling Club
Winchester Virginia

Willie Walters Wrestling Club is a youth travel team competing in the Mason-Dixon Youth Wrestling League.

Named after the late wrestling coach of James Wood High School, Willie Walters Wrestling Club aims to promote youth wrestling and to foster the ideals of good sportsmanship through wrestling.

Founded in 1974 to serve Winchester and the surrounding area. The club is open to interested participants outside of the local area with space permitting and at the discretion of the coaching staff.

Participants must be between the ages of 5 and 14 as of December 31.

While first year wrestler's are encouraged, we also recommend the Frederick County Parks and Rec Wrestling program as an introductory step.

Wrestlers are divided into age divisions and weight classes as follows:

Bantams -ages 5-6-7 with weight classes from 36 to 72 in 4-lb increments

Midgets -ages 8-9 with weight classes from 50 to 105 in 5-lb increments

Juniors -ages 10-11 with weight classes from 58 to 130 in scaled increments

Intermediates -ages 12 -14,  with weight classes from 70 to 160 in 7-lb increments.

Each age division also has an unlimited weight class.

A fifteen year old may participate in regular season matches if they are not co-participating on a high-school wrestling team. A fifteen year old will not be allowed to participate in the championship tournament.

The wrestling season commences in early November with practice two times a week at James Wood Middle School, leading into weekly meets on Saturdays or Sundays from January through mid March. Some meets are in Frederick County, while others are in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania; all within about 1.5 hours of Winchester.  The season will culminate in a League Championship in mid March. The League consists of over twenty teams divided into two divisions representing four states, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Our success is built upon solid wrestling fundamentals, strenuous conditioning and and a high degree of discipline. The successes include six straight Team Championships from 2000-2005 and three runner up finishes since then.

Willie Walters Wrestling is a great springboard for middle and high school wrestlers.  If interested, check our website in early September for registration information and sign-up.

• No street shoes, loose clothing, or clothes with zippers snaps etc. on mats
• Headgear and wrestling shoes are recommended but not required
• Use sign-in sheets ( make sure info is updated and weight is appropriate)
• Practice will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays
• No school = no practice
• No team singlets worn for practice
• We will use Calling Post voice messages and email for urgent updates
• Check this website periodically for other urgent updates

Parent notices:

• Wrestlers are expected to compete every weekend unless excused by the coaching staff. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the practice room door weekly starting in January. Please be sure to indicate on these sign-in sheets whether your son(s) will or will not be participating in the regular meet for that weekend. This information is used to determine the bout match ups for the meet, and are normally prepared on Friday. Therefore, it is extremely important to indicate no later than Thursday practice whether you will be attending the weekend meet. If you fail to make practice by Thursday, please phone the Club contact no later than Thursday evening and indicate whether your son(s) will be wrestling that week.

• Parent volunteers are essential for the smooth conduct of our home meets. Table help is needed to run three mats, with each table having three positions: a scorer, a timer, and a referee signaler/runner.  Volunteers are also needed to help out with the concession stand and to stay after the meet and help roll up the mats and clean up the gym.  Coaches volunteer their time and expertise to train your wrestlers -- this is a way, parents, that you can show your appreciation for that effort and give something back to the club. Please contact Trish Roy if you wish to help out  (540-888-0007).
